A sanitation project funded by the World Bank has been put into operation in Vietnam’s central province of Quang Binh with the aim of improving the lives of local residents. The project on drainage and waste water treatment system in Dong Hoi city completes after seven years of construction. This is one of three WB-funded projects on environmental sanitation for central coastal cities in Vietnam with a total investment capital of $78.5 million, including $59 million from the WB’s preferential loans, more than $1.3 million in non-refundable aid and the remaining sourced from local budget. The project focused on building and upgrading the rainwater drainage system, building a waste water treatment plant, supporting a sanitation program at schools, supplying garbage collecting equipment and enhancing communication campaigns. The plant is designed to treat 10,000 cubic meters of waste water per day discharged by 78,000 residents in the city. Only 40% of Vietnam’s people have access to safe water as required by the Ministry of Health. (Vov.vn July 20)
