Vietnam sees between 12,000 to 15,000 new cases of congenital heart disease (CHD) each year, said Dr. Le Thanh Khanh Van, head of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit at Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital.
Dr. Van highlighted this data at the fourth Cardiovascular Scientific Conference held by Cho Ray Hospital's Cardiovascular Center in HCMC on September 8.
Dr. Van emphasized that in the past 50 years, the management and treatment of CHD have seen significant progress, reduced complications and mortality rates, while improving the quality of life and life expectancy of patients. However, a large number of CHD patients still lack access to standard care and treatment.
He highlighted the importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) for prenatal detection, care planning, and management, as well as utilizing advanced imaging techniques such as 3D echocardiography, CT scans, and MRIs. He also pointed to the need for advancements in surgical interventions, including hybrid cardiovascular surgeries and pediatric heart transplantation.
Dr. Truong Phi Hung, deputy head of Cardiology at Cho Ray Hospital, added that the growing complexity of treating critically ill cardiac patients underscores the necessity of developing dedicated cardiac care units.
