For the first time in Vietnam's medical history, doctors successfully performed a simultaneous heart and liver transplant on a critically ill patient, Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital announced on October 9.
The transplant involved a 41-year-old patient, who was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and multiple organ dysfunction. He was admitted in severe heart failure. On September 30, the patient did not respond to standard treatments and required both a heart and liver transplant.
On the same day, Nghe An General Friendship Hospital reported a patient with severe traumatic brain injury whose family agreed to organ donation. After confirming brain death, the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital convened a medical council meeting and decided to proceed with the transplant.
Thirty-six hours after the surgery, the patient’s liver and heart functions began to improve. He is now alert, able to talk, and both his heart and liver functions are gradually returning to normal.
