Authorities of Vietnam’s central province of Ninh Thuan have approved a VND146 billion ($7 million) project on upgrading river dyke system in Phan Rang-Thap Chap city. The dyke system to be built in the northern bank of Dinh river is aimed to prevent floods for people in Phan Rang-Thap Chap city, the Nong Nghiep Viet Nam newspaper reported. The project is slated for completion by the end of 2011.
Vietnam is facing a serious capital shortage for upgrading dyke systems, negatively affecting the national flood prevention program. The government spent VND3 trillion on dyke repairs in the 2006-2010 period, but the money only covered about 25% of the work, experts said, adding that “we are calling for investment from enterprises and organizations to upgrade dyke systems.
