Vietnam’s central province of Quang Ngai has approved a VND610 billion ($29.33 million) project on building sea dyke routes in Ly Son island district, the Quan Doi Nhan Dan newspaper reported Aug 19.
The dyke routes with 5.4 kilometers in length which will be built in An Vinh and An Hai communes, are expected to withstand the level 9 storm and tidal surge. The project is aimed to prevent saline-water encroachment and help stabilize lives of 1,000 local households and serve rescue works, national defense and security issues. Vietnam is facing a serious capital shortage for upgrading dyke systems, negatively affecting the national flood prevention program. The government spent VND3 trillion on dyke repairs in the 2006-2010 period, but the money only covered about 25% of the work, experts said, adding that “we are calling for investment from enterprises and organizations to upgrade dyke systems.
