The Vietnamese Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) held a seminar in Hanoi on November 15 to seek suggestions and proposals for designing a decree on domestic helpers. In fact, the current Labor Code lacks specific regulations on the management and use of house maids, the An Ninh Thu Do newspaper reported Nov 16, citing MoLISA Deputy Minister Pham Minh Huan.
“It is necessary to introduce policies on domestic helpers to protect them from being exploited and abused in their workplaces and to ensure their benefits,” Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO) office in Hanoi Rie Vejs Kjeldgaard said.
“The government needs to promulgate a decree on domestic helpers with regulations on their ages, working hours, wage levels, labor safety, social and medical insurance and responsibility of employers,” Tran Thi Hong from the Family and Gender Institute, added. The MoLISA plans to submit to the government a decree, guiding some articles on domestic helpers of the Labor Code in December.
