Hanoi Medical University (HMU) was established in 1902 and is amongst the largest and oldest universities in Vietnam. HMU has trained more than 17,000 medical doctors and about 10,000 post-graduate students. HMU institutions are involved in both development of advanced clinical medicine as well as in high quality public health research. The Public Health Faculty is, in addition, one of the few institutions in Vietnam which provides specialized training in public health. HMU as well as the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health have good relationships and collaborations with national and international institutions. International collaborative countries include Sweden, France, United Kingdom, the USA, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan and Indonesia. HMU and the Faculty of Public Health are also very important advisors for the Ministry of Health in Vietnam regarding strategies and policies for the health sector. HMU has close collaboration with several major hospitals where students are trained and research is conducted, among them Bach Mai, the National Pediatric Hospital, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases and the National TB Hospital.
A Grants Office will shortly be opened with the aim of improving competence in the acquisition of external funding through research grants from national and international sources. This involves identifying appropriate funding sources, help with planning and writing applications, budgeting and then negotiation and contract handling after successful evaluation. This is part of a research network including Karolinska Institutet, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam, Gothenburg University, Hanoi Medical University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in HCMC.

Overall Role
- To actively obtain and disseminate information about all grants open for researchers in the fields of interest for the network.
- To act as a consultant body providing advice and support for preparing and submitting applications.
- To arrange seminars and courses on application writing.
- To proactively facilitate interaction for grant applications between research groups.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Proactively communicate and facilitate relationships with researchers at Vietnamese and partner institutions who are interested in developing research grants and identify possible collaboration possibilities.
- Identify appropriate research grant calls, both Vietnamese and international, through available sources, e.g. databases.
- Develop a good understanding of the procedures and requirements of the major research grant awarding bodies, such as EU, NIH, Wellcome trust, the Vietnamese research fund etc.
- To assess all appropriate open grant calls and match with research groups.
- To have an up-to-date database of applicable grant calls.
- To actively communicate open grant calls through e-mail, website, newsletter, seminars, personal contacts etc.
- To work closely with researchers and provide advice on completion of applications.
- To support the preparation of generic sections for inclusion in grant applications, e.g. data management and sharing plans, ethical approval process, public engagement.
- To support the completion of on-line grant applications.
- To check grant applications for completeness and accuracy prior to final submission to funding bodies.
- Maintain a record of submitted grants and outcome.
- Organize meetings, seminars and courses in conjunction with network researchers, e.g. on how to write grant applications.
- Monitoring and reporting on successful grants including reminding investigators on reporting requirements and deadlines.
Training and benefits:
- Training including time at a Grants Office in Europe and/or other Asian country will be provided.
- The salary will be in two parts: one monthly basic salary and one part based on performance.
Personal expectations
1. Education
- University degree, preferably in medicine, public health, social sciences, or business administration.
- Preferably Master degree or higher.
2. Professional Experience
- At least 2 years experience in a research or public health structure (University, Public or NGO).
- Experience of writing grant applications in English.
3. Languages
- Strong English and Vietnamese writing and speaking skills, translation abilities during official meetings.
- Very strong analytical and reporting skills.
4. Required Skills
- Strong sense of diplomacy and seasoned social skills.
- Result-oriented, self-starting and strongly motivated, well organized and autonomous.
- Persuasive and persistent, computer competent and outstanding at making presentations.
- Good understanding of health program management and Vietnamese institutions.
- Ability to synthesize material to draft high quality notes and informative documents.
