Mission Statement
The German Red Cross (GRC) is a member of the world wide Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, assisting victims of disaster, conflict, war and people affected by social or health crisis. The purpose of the Organization is embedded in its constitution: to prevent and alleviate human suffering, to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being!The Red Cross (RC) provides assistance to vulnerable people without discrimination as nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinion and adheres to the seven principles of the Red Cross movement: Humanity; Impartiality; Neutrality; Independence; Voluntary Service; Unity; Universality.The German Red Cross is also a part of the world wide Red Cross Movement, comprised of theInternational Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and RedCrescent Societies (IFRC) as well as currently 186 Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies all over the world. The German Red Cross (GRC) is not only one of thebiggest welfare organizations in Germany; it also plays a major role at international level by assisting sister National Red Cross/ Red Crescent Societies in the event of natural or technical disasters and in humanitarian crises. The GRC also co-operates with these Societies in order to strengthen their capacity to respond to disasters and vulnerabilities. Within this framework, the GRC areas of intervention are based on the three main pillars: emergencyresponse/ rehabilitation, Disaster Preparedness and development co-operation.
History of operations in Vietnam
In Vietnam the GRC has been active since the middle of the 90s but only since mid 2007 a Country office was established in Hanoi. Since middle of 2007 the German Red Cross and the Vietnamese Red Cross (VNRC) working together in a long-term development project in four provinces (Bag Giang, Bac Ninh, Lang Son and Cao Bang) in Community Based Health Care and Red Cross Branch Development. Additionally, five projects in disaster response were implemented between 2008 and 2010. These disaster response projects were supporting victims of different typhoons and flooding in north and central Vietnam. Furthermore since the middle of 2010 a Disaster Risk Reduction project is implemented in Hue province in central Vietnam.
