Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan called on the U.K. government to continue supporting the Southeast Asian country to cope with climate change.
Nhan made the call at a meeting with British Minister of Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband Mar. 9 during his three-day visit to the U.K., the government said on its website March 10. The Deputy PM expressed his thank to the U.K. for its assistance to Vietnam in the field, expecting the foreign country will transfer clean technologies and reducing emissions through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. Ed Miliband agreed to provide more aid for Vietnam in completing a scenario of climate change, preparing the attending of the 16th UN Climate Change Conference (COP16) in Mexico and holding an ASEM seminar on climate change in Hanoi this year. Vietnam is listed among five hardest-hit by climate change countries. If sea levels rise by one meter, 38% of the country’s delta and coastal areas will be submerged. Two-way trade between Vietnam and the U.K. hit $1.7 billion last year and is expected to increase to $2 billion this year.
