Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region requires VND2.31 trillion ($125 million) to upgrade dike system to cope with rising sea water resulting from climate change, the state media reported. The Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning said that the project will mitigate negative impacts of storms and floods and protect local residents and production units in the region. The project aims to upgrade 620 kilometers of sea dike and 740 kilometers of river dike and river outfalls, the Vietnam News Agency said. Scientists warned that sea water rise will submerge 15,000-20,000 square kilometers in Mekong Delta region by the end of this century. Currently the dike system in the Mekong Delta region is not capable of resisting strong sea waves and preventing rising sea water.
