Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi is estimated to need nearly VND100 trillion ($5.4 billion) for a flood prevention project between 2010 and 2020. Vice Chairman of the city People’s Committee Trinh Duy Hung said that the funding will come from the state budget, ODA loans, particularly from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank. The project will be developed into two stages with aims to help dredge rivers and upgrade dikes, the An ninh Thu do newspaper reported Wednesday. Under the project approved by the municipal authorities, 21,000 families who are living along big rivers in the city will have to relocate.
In late October last year, the capital city witnessed the historical flood, the worst over the two decades and it estimated to spend VND800 billion to deal with the aftermaths. The floods killed 22 people and caused losses of VND3 trillion ($162.4 million) for the city.
