Saigon Water Supply Corp. (Sawaco) started work on a project worth nearly VND6 billion ($324,700) to provide clean water for 7,000 households in Ho Chi Minh City’s Hoc Mon district on Jan. 27. Under the project, Sawaco will install 6,500 meters of a pipeline system and 1,000 water meters for locals in the first phase slated to complete in April 25 of 2010, the Thanh nien newspaper reported Jan. 28. This year, the city's biggest water utility will invest VND17 billion ($919,900) into installing 21,000-meter water supply pipeline systems and 2,500 water meters in the district. This is part of Sawaco’s efforts to increase its daily tap water supply to 1.8 million cubic meters by the end of this year from current 1.2 million cubic meters. The corporation expects 92% of the city’s population will gain access to clean water by its plants by 2015.
