Russia is willing to help Vietnam build safety and security standards as well as legal documents for nuclear power projects, said Kutin Nikolay Georgievich, chairman of Russian Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor). Kutin made the statement at a receiption given by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi on June 17, the Vietnamese government said on its website late June 17. Rostekhnadzor will cooperate with the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and the Ministry of Science and Technology to train nuclear energy experts for the Southeast Asian nation, Kutin attributed. Kutin affirmed that Rostekhnadzor would complete training experts as well as building the safety & security standards and legal documents before Vietnam starts the construction of its first nuclear power plant in 2014. Vietnam chose Russian Rosatom to use Russia’s Light Water Reactor (LWR) technology to build the two first reactors as Russia is experienced in building nuclear power plants in full compliance with international requirements on nuclear security and safety. The nation plans to build two first nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW in the central province of Ninh Thuan, and is seeking suitable locations to build between eight and ten more nuclear power plants through 2030.
