SNV Netherlands Development Organization provided EUR3.7 million ($4.52 million) in non-refundable aid for Vietnam to carry out a project to build 165,672 biogas cellars in 50 cities and provinces through 2012. The project is expected to help targeted localities save over VND600 billion ($31.6 million) worth of energy spending a year and reduce 400,000 tons of CO2 emission annually, the Vietnam Economic News magazine reported. As of end-2009, the Dutch-funded project had helped build over 70,000 biogas cellars in 37 cities and provinces across Vietnam.
