Mission Statement
Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
History of operations in Vietnam
Room to Read is an International NGO which was founded by John Wood in 2000 with the conviction that “world change starts with educated children”. At present we are present in 9 countries in Asia and Africa. The headquarter office is based in San Francisco, the US.Room to Read came to Vietnam in 2001 with our first project of establishing a language lab, which was the direct result of the government's request to assist in improving foreign language teaching facilities of the country. At present, we are working in the six provinces/city of Ho Chi Minh, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, and Can Tho. To mark our 10 years of operation in Vietnam, a strategic decision has been made to expand our programs to northern provinces of Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen in 2011.We partner with communities that are proactive and committed working towards a sustainable solution to help children becoming a lifelong learner. Local to Vietnam, our team speaks the language, knows the customs and laws, and understands the issues surrounding the implementation of our various programs. In all of our programs, local communities make their contribution through a "Challenge Grant" to complete a given project. The idea of this “Challenge Grant” is to ensure the sustainability of a project.
