WB Helps Develop Urban Transport System in Vietnam City

The People’s Committee in Vietnam’s northern city of Haiphong and the World Bank (WB) kicked off an urban transport development project on August 16. The five-year project is aimed to develop the city’s urban transport system and strengthen capacity for urban traffic management and planning in Haiphong. The project, which will be implemented from 2011 to 2016, includes three main components. The first component involves developing main urban roads to increase accessibility by building a new east-west link for cross-town traffic within Haiphong. The second component will transform public transport services along the Tam Bac – Kien An urban corridor andupgrade traffic infrastructure and facilities. The third component will focus on institutional capacity building, including training human resources and supporting the project implementation. The project has an estimated investment of over $276 million with $175 million provided by the WB and the remaining sourced from the local budget.
