Vietnam Vows to Phase out Substances Harmful to Ozone Layer from 2024

Vietnam has begun a roadmap to manage and phase out Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) harmful to ozone layers from 2024, aiming for an 80% decrease in HFC consumption by 2045, said Mr. Tang The Cuong, director general of the Department of Climate Change under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE).

The official made the statement at a workshop regarding HFCs and Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) management and phase-out in Hanoi on July 18.

Mr. Cuong stated that the HFC consumption will decline by 10% in 2029-2034, 30% in 2035-2039, 50% in 2040-2044, and 80% from 2045. Besides, Vietnam will end the import of HCFCs in 2040, he added.

At the event, Mr. Ashraf El-Arini, Environmental Specialist of the World Bank (WB), said that Vietnam’s roadmap of HFC elimination for the period 2024-2045 would help the country cut emissions equivalent to 10,974 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2045 and contribute to national climate goals.

He noted that the management of HFC use would also promote low-carbon development actions. (Vietnam Plus, Bao Tai Nguyen Moi Truong)
