Vietnam Shifts HIV Care Strategy with “Fourth 90” Target
The "Fourth 90" target marks a strategic change in Vietnam's approach to HIV care and treatment, with a focus on people living with HIV, said Assoc. Prof.-Dr. Phan Thi Thu Huong, head of the Vietnam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC).
Assoc. Prof.-Dr. Thu Huong made the evaluation at the workshop "Achieving the 'Fourth 90' Target - Quality of Life and Well-being for People Living with HIV and Key Populations in Vietnam," held in the northern province of Ninh Binh on May 7-8.
The workshop was organized by the VAAC in collaboration with the BIDMC Organization and the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam, with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
At the event, Vietnam Country Director at U.S. CDC Dr. Eric Dziuban stated that the "Fourth 90" target follows the 90-90-90 goals. These are the primary goals for the country's HIV response activities, aiming to achieve 90% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 90% of them receiving treatment, 90% of them achieving viral load suppression below the detection threshold, and the “Fourth 90” target comes after achieving viral load suppression, ensuring that people living with HIV have a good quality of life and well-being.
The U.S. CDC is committed to helping Vietnam achieve the "Fourth 90" target, he affirmed.
Vietnam now has 10,000-12,000 HIV/AIDS cases annually, a third of the peak years. (Suc Khoe Doi Song, tiengchuong.chinhphu.vn)
