Vietnam Seeks EU’s Support in Developing Renewable Energy Industry: Minister

Vietnam hopes to receive great support from the European Union (EU) and its member countries in terms of finance, governance capacity, and technology for the country’s development of the renewable energy industry, said Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh.

The minister made the call while hosting a delegation of European ambassadors to Vietnam, led by EU Ambassador Julien Guerrier, in Hanoi on November 15.

He also proposed the EU further assist Vietnam in establishing a domestic carbon market connected to the international market and offer technical support and experience sharing in building and operating the European emissions trading systems, promoting carbon market development, and managing emission quotas.

The country also seeks the EU’s support in implementing projects regarding energy transition, clean transportation transformation, and new energy such as green hydrogen, Mr. Khanh said.

Emphasizing that Vietnam is ready to participate in the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), with the attendance of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the minister briefed the guests about Vietnam’s targets at the COP28 as well as its efforts in responding climate change and developing the energy industry.

For his part, Ambassador Julien Guerrier affirmed that the EU highly praises Vietnam’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, which attracts EU businesses.

He suggested Vietnam share its programs and solutions in energy transition, greenhouse gas emission reduction, climate change adaptation, and environmental protection at COP28.

Welcoming the Vietnamese proposals, the diplomat promised to work with relevant agencies to support Vietnam in realizing its goals of protecting the environment and responding to climate change. (Bao Tai Nguyen Moi Truong)
