Vietnam Reports 66,300 Hungry Households in January

Vietnam recorded 66,300 hungry families in Jan 2012, with 269,600 starveling people, up 5.9% and 7.5% from a year earlier, respectively. Most of the households are mainly in rural remote mountainous provinces, central coastal areas and central highlands region, the government’s General Statistics Office (GSO) said. During the month, the government and organizations at all levels provided more than 10,000 tons of food and VND22.4 billion ($1 million) for hunger relief in disadvantaged areas. Last year, the country also reported 622,800 hungry households with 2.62 million starveling people, posting an on-year decrease of 21.7% and 14.6%, respectively. (GSO Jan Edition)
