Vietnam Records 35 Earthquakes in Aug: Center

Vietnam is estimated to have logged 35 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 3.6 on the Richter scale in August, according to the Vietnam Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, under the Institute of Geophysics (IGP).

Of those, 30 quakes occurred in Kon Plong district in Central Highlands province of Kon Tum. The others happened in Tien Yen district in northern Quang Ninh province and Nam Tra My district in central Quang Nam province.

In July, the country detected 93 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.5 to 4.2 Richter, of which 90 happened in Kon Plong district. Experts assessed that earthquakes in this district have occurred continuously in the year to date, with increasing frequency and stronger intensity than in previous years.

Professor Nguyen Xuan Anh, rector of the IGP, forecast that Vietnam may face some earthquakes with magnitudes below 5.5, or at the “moderate” level, in the second half of this year.
