Vietnamese students won two gold medals at the 2013 Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS) in Singapore on June 1, winning Vietnam a place in the top ten nations for the first time. Among the ten Vietnamese candidates at the competition, Hanoi students Nguyen Nga Nhi and Nguyen Dang Khoi ranked fourth and ninth in the region, respectively. The ten students were selected from 482 contestants who participated in the Olympiad’s first round in Vietnam. APMOPS is an annual mathematics contest held by the Hwa Chong Academy of Singapore for pupils of 6th-7th grade in the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnam first hosted the contest in 2009 when Vietnamese students ended up in 11th place. In 2010, Vietnam ranked 12th among participating countries. Vietnamese students also won a number of platinum, gold, silver and bronze certificates in 2011. (www.vov.vn June 4)
