Vietnam Ranks 5th in Number of International Students in U.S. in 2022-2023

Vietnam remained fifth in terms of the number of international students in the United States for the 2022-2023 academic year, following China, India, South Korea, and Canada, according to the latest report by the U.S. government-funded Institute of International Education (IIE).

This was the second time Vietnam had been listed in the top five, the IIE noted.

Specifically, Vietnam had 21,900 students learning in the U.S. in the academic year, up 5.7% y/y and making up 2% of the total number of international students. The sum included 14,295 learners at the higher education level, 3,768 at the post-graduate level, 3,276 under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, and 561 under the non-degree certification program.

Last academic year, Vietnamese students contributed $816 million to the U.S. economy, up 13.18% y/y, the report attributed.

In 2022-2023, the U.S. received more than one million students from 200 countries and territories, up 11.5% y/y, of whom Chinese students held the top spot with 289,526 learners, down 0.2% y/y and accounting for 27% of the total, informed the IIE report.
