Vietnam’s Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has decided to invest more than VND367 billion ($18.82 million) in clean water supply program in rural areas in the 2011-2015 period. The program is aimed to raise ratio of locals using clean water to 95% by 2015, from current 85%, with an average of 60 liters of water/person/day, the Thanh Nien newspaper reported Nov 18. Dong Thap targets to provide clean water for all local clinics and 80% of schools as well as build hygiene latrines for most public places by the year. The province has invested more than VND126 billion on building 202 tap water supply systems for rural people since 2006. Vietnam will implement a VND500-billion project to provide clean water for almost all rural citizens by 2020. Currently, only 40% of Vietnamese rural citizens have used clean water.
