Vietnam Performs First-Ever Trachea Transplant, Esophageal Reconstruction
On August 7, Viet Duc University Hospital in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi announced that its surgeons successfully performed a trachea transplant using donor tissue from a brain-dead individual, combined with esophageal reconstruction surgery for a patient injured in a traffic accident.
This procedure marks the first successful trachea transplant with esophageal reconstruction in Vietnam and is rare in global medical literature.
This procedure is noted for its rarity in global medical literature and marks the first successful operation of its kind in Vietnam, Dr. Duong Duc Hung, director of Viet Duc University Hospital, evaluated.
He added that this success highlights the expertise of local surgeons at the largest surgical hospital in northern Vietnam. With the latest result, the hospital has now placed Vietnam on the global map of trachea transplants and further demonstrated the proficiency and standing of Vietnamese healthcare.
