Vietnam Needs $5.14B for Sewerage, Wastewater Treatment in River Basins
Vietnam is estimated to need VND108 trillion ($5.14 billion) for a planning on water drainage and wastewater treatment in the basins of Nhue and Day rivers from now until 2030. Of the sum, VND90.42 trillion will be spent on the work in the 2013-2020 period and the rest for the next ten years. The funding will be spent on building 107 reservoirs and 47 pumping stations as well as 12 wastewater treatment plants for local households and industrial production in Hanoi and the four northern provinces of Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh and Hoa Binh. Earlier in April, the Ministry of Planning and Investment started a project on managing environmental pollution at industrial parks on the banks of the Dong Nai, Nhue and Day rivers by 2018 with $50 million funded by the World Bank (WB). Covering 7,665sq.km and flows through the five localities, the Nhue-Day river basins are suffering severe pollution despite a range of environmental protection projects carried out by agencies including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Most rivers and lakes across Vietnam are severely contaminated by untreated industrial and domestic waste and wastewater due to the rising number of industrial parks and lax management by authorized agencies.
