Vietnam Ministry Names Projects Threatening Environmental Safety

Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has publicized a list of 30 projects that pose risks to environmental protection, state media reported. The majority of the projects belong to power industry, including big thermal projects namely Thai Binh 1, Vinh Tan 2, Vinh Tan 4, Vinh Tan 4 Extension, Duyen Hai 1, Duyen Hai 3, and Duyen Hai 3 Extension projects. The above projects are invested by state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the country’s sole power distributor. Other power projects namely Vung Ang 1, Long Phu 1, Thai Binh 2, Song Hau 2 thermal power projects are invested by state-run Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam). Its Nghi Son Oil Refinery complex is also in the list. Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin), meanwhile appeared in the list at the role of the investor of Nhan Co-Dak Nong Aluminum project, Thach Khe iron ore mining project, and Sin Quyen copper manufacturing project. Vietnam National Chemical Group has DAP No.1 Co., Ltd, DAP No.2 Co., Ltd, Lam Thao Fertilizers and Chemicals JSC, and other chemicals factories. To ensure no violations of regulations on environmental protection, Minister Tran Tuan Anh of Industry and Trade signed a decree on Oct 19 that the ministry’s authorized agencies need to keep a close watch on the mentioned projects for the 2016-2017. In its Directive dated October 19 on environmental protection for the industry-trade sector, the MoIT asked all coal-fired power plants to ensure the ash treatment and monitor the pollutants emissions while production in all other sectors namely electricity, chemical production, mining, garment-textile must review technology and environmental regulations.
