Vietnam Ministry Limits Primary Classes to 35 Students for 2024-2025 School Year

Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has requested the local primary schools to limit the number of students not to exceed 35 pupils, effective for the 2024-2025 school year, state media reported.

This regulation aims to improve educational quality but faces challenges due to overcrowding in urban areas, namely Hanoi City and Ho Chi Minh City.

The directive also includes requirements for schools to maintain a teacher-to-class ratio of 1.5 and to provide adequate teaching equipment for effective learning. The average class size nationwide was 32 students last year, but population growth in certain cities has led to class sizes exceeding the ministry’s guidelines.

In addition to class size regulation, the ministry plans to expand the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across primary schools.

The initiative will be rolled out nationwide after a successful pilot in seven provinces, including Hanoi City and Nam Dinh province. Hanoi will lead in integrating STEM education into all schools for the 2023-2024 school year.
