Vietnam Loses $3.4B on Natural Disasters in Jan-Sep, Mostly Due to Storm Yagi

Vietnam recorded an economic loss of VND81.8 trillion ($3.4 billion) due to natural disasters in the first nine months of this year, of which mostly from the Typhoon Yagi, according to the latest data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).

By the end of September, Typhoon Yagi caused 345 deaths/missing and injured 1,978 people; while damaging 349,900 hectares of paddy and veggies; more than 5.8 million heads of poultry and cattle; and 405,988 houses, the GSO said.

In January-September, Vietnam logged 3,193 cases of fires and explosions, which claimed the lives of 85 people and injured 87 others, causing an economic loss of VND217.4 billion, down 39.8% y/y.

Besides, relevant agencies detected 17,342 environmental violations and handled 15,852 of them, with total fines of VND224.7 billion, up 3.4% y/y.
