Vietnam HCMC Proposes Yearly Financial Aid for English Teachers amid Shortage

Authorities in Vietnam’s southern economic hub of Ho Chi Minh City have considered providing annual financial support of VND30 million-VND50 million ($1,180-$1,965) for English teachers and teachers of certain subjects at the primary school level to address a teacher shortage, local media reported.

The municipal Department of Education and Training made the announcement on May 30.

The proposed policy includes VND50 million for first-year teachers, VND40 million per year for the second and third years, and VND30 million per year for the fourth year onwards.

The department explained that new graduates often face financial challenges and job adjustments during their first three years, leading many to quit. The financial aid is intended to motivate and retain them.

To avoid discrimination, the department also suggested that teachers with at least three years of experience receive VND30 million annually. However, teachers who fail to fulfill their duties or are disciplined will lose the benefit.

This school year, HCMC has hired 267 new teachers in English and other subjects. The city has 731 teachers who have worked for up to two years and over 4,600 who have worked for at least three years. The total financial aid required is expected to be around VND182 billion annually.
