Vietnam to Establish First Regional Thoracic Surgery Center
Vietnam will soon have its first regional thoracic surgery center, thanks to a partnership between FV Hospital, part of the Thomson Medical Group, and Singapore's O2 Healthcare Group, a specialized lung center, local media reported.
The collaboration agreement was signed in Ho Chi Minh City on August 15. The center, to be developed at FV Hospital, will be led by Dr. Su Jang Wen, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and lung cancer specialist.
The new facility aims to enhance lung cancer treatment outcomes in Vietnam by offering advanced diagnostic and treatment options at affordable rates. The partnership will also bring top specialists from Singapore to FV Hospital, expanding the hospital's capabilities in various complex medical fields, including cardiac interventions, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, and oncology.
Dr. Su, who has received advanced training in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in the United States, has performed over 7,000 lung, heart, and esophageal surgeries since 2007. Notably, 95% of these procedures were done using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive technique known for its high success rates in treating thoracic conditions like lung cancer.
Remarkably, Dr. Su has maintained a record of zero post-operative mortality in elective surgeries.
Lung cancer remains one of the most common and deadly cancers in Vietnam, affecting both men and women. The disease is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country. Most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, making treatment challenging and expensive.
