Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Needs VND13.4T to Control Landslides

Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region needs around VND13.4 trillion ($558.3 million) to handle 63 severe landslide and erosion places along the riverside and coastal areas with a total length of 240 kilometers, state media reported.

The information was unveiled at a meeting held in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang on August 17, after a delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development took field trips to five Mekong Delta provinces, namely Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, and Long An.

Riverbank and coastal erosion in the Mekong Delta is increasing in terms of places, scale, speed, and scope, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep.

Meanwhile, most localities cannot afford to invest in infrastructure for landslide prevention, he added.

The deputy minister proposed developing specific projects for the whole region instead of projects conducted separately. Mr. Hiep asked the localities to offer solutions to submit to the Government for future solutions.

Since 2016, Mekong Delta’s localities have found 779 landslide places totaling 1,134 kilometers.
