Vietnam’s Losses by Natural Disasters Drop 64.8% y/y to $85M in Jan-Aug

Vietnam is estimated to have recorded an economic loss of nearly VND2.04 trillion ($85 million) due to natural disasters in the first eight months of this year, down 64.8% y/y, according to the latest data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Natural disasters are estimated to have caused 79 deaths/missing and injured 91 people, while damaging nearly 106,100 hectares of paddy and veggies; 16,300 poultry and cattle; and more than 16,200 houses, the GSO said.

In January-August, Vietnam is likely to have logged 1,286 cases of fires and explosions, which claimed the lives of 69 people and injured 64 others, causing an economic loss of nearly VND200.7 billion, down 61.5% y/y.

Besides, relevant agencies have detected 12,040 environmental violations and handled 10,704 of them, with total fines of nearly VND198.4 billion, up 15% y/y. (GSO)
