USAID Funds $2M Wildlife Conservation Projects in Vietnam

The U.S. and Vietnam have initiated two wildlife conservation projects in Hanoi, funded by USAID with over $2 million, to combat illegal wildlife trafficking and promote sustainable practices, state media reported.

Implemented by Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) and the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (CCD), these projects will support the protection of biodiversity in Cat Tien National Park, Dong Nai Nature and Culture Reserve, and Huong Son Special-Use Forest in Hanoi.

These are the first wildlife trafficking prevention projects funded directly by USAID to local organizations in Vietnam.

Efforts include enhancing staff capacity, applying the SMART tool for data management and patrol reporting, and using camera traps to monitor wildlife. In addition, the projects aim to reduce the demand for illegal wildlife products by raising public awareness and engaging local communities.

USAID Deputy Director Debra Mosel emphasized the importance of local leadership in achieving long-term environmental protection and biodiversity conservation goals, reinforcing the role of local groups in addressing wildlife trafficking issues.
