U.S. Ready to Help Vietnam Develop Nuclear Facilities
The U.S. is willing to help Vietnam develop its nuclear facilities, but not enriching uranium, Ambassador Glyn Davies, Washington's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a press conference in Hanoi Dec 8.
“Our government highly values Vietnam’s important role and it wants to cooperate with Vietnam in nuclear development in frameworks of the IAEA as well as of the bilateral cooperation”, Glyn Davies said at a visit to the communist country. With respect to the status of the 123 negotiations, the two countries are continuing their efforts to expand civil nuclear cooperation, Davies noted.
On the same day, the U.S.’s Ambassador Michael Michalak to Vietnam informed that the two countries have reached an agreement on converting Da Lat Nuclear Plant from using high enriched uranium (HEU) to low enriched uranium (LEU). The conversion is part of initiatives to reduce global risks of the National Nuclear Security Administration under the U.S.’s Department of Energy.
