UNICEF Pledges to Further Children Protection in Vietnam

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has pledged to further children protection in Vietnam through an action program in the next five years, state media reported. The program was signed by the UNICEF Representative in Vietnam Lotta Sylwander and Vietnamese vice National Assembly Chairman Uong Chu Luu in Hanoi Mar 18. Under the program, the fund will support the NA and its bodies in boosting supervision of the law enforcement in reality, said Lotta Sylwander, adding that Vietnam should issue concrete guidance documents for the protection of children. Though Vietnam was among the first nations ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and policies relating to children’s rights, protection, care and education, the country shows weak implementation of these regulations, she noted. The 87-million country remains around 1.54 million or 6% disadvantaged children including disabled, dropouts and poor ones who sometimes plunged into society with numerous lurking risks, local experts said (Vietnam News Mar 20)
