Unexploded Vietnam War Bomb Ignored For Years

Authorities of Long An Province have done nothing for the past five years after a 500-kg bomb left from the Vietnam War was found in a field here, local residents said. The bomb has since been cut open by some locals for the explosive inside. There is some more explosive with the fuse left in the 1.5 meter long bomb in Duc Hue District, according to a Sunday report by the Tien Phong newspaper.
Nguyen Van Dep, a local resident, said the bomb was discovered in 2007 during ground clearance for a company. But local authorities have not done anything about it after locals reported the bomb's discovery. Another bomb was discovered in the paddy field of a local woman named Le Thi Dia several years ago, but this has also been left untouched by the authorities. Records with the district police show that a fatal accident takes place every two or three years as locals cut bombs left from the war for explosives and metal to sell to scrap metal dealers.
