Typhoon Kalmaegi Wrecks North Vietnam, Kills 10 So Far

Typhoon Kalmaegi, the third storm to hit Vietnam so far this year, made a landfall on the northern region and brought torrential rainfalls, and killed at least 10 people and injured nine others there for two days. The northern city and provinces of Haiphong, Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, and Nam Dinh were the hardest-hit localities with thousands of hectares of paddy rice, cash crop, and fruit trees destroyed. Last year, Vietnam lost around VND28 trillion ($1.3 billion), equivalent to 1% of GDP, due to natural disasters. (Chinhphu.vn Sept 18)
