Quang Ngai Invests $30M on Erosion Prevention Projects
Vietnam’s central province of Quang Ngai is implementing a series of projects to combat coastal and river erosion, aiming to stabilize the livelihoods of local residents, as well as create transport corridors to drive socio-economic development in the localities.
Le Quoc Dat, director of the Project Management Board for Transportation Infrastructure Construction in Quang Ngai Province, said that this year, the province had prioritized allocating funding of up to VND720 billion ($30.3 million) to simultaneously implement six projects to combat river and coastal erosion.
The project management board had regularly inspected the implementation of the projects to ensure the completion of them before the rainy season, he said.
The coastal embankment project in two villages in Binh Hai Commune, Binh Son District, was being urgently completed before the rainy season this year, aiming to ensure the safety of nearly 400 households.
The 300m long embankment had a total investment of VND25 billion and would contribute to ensuring the safety of public infrastructures.
Dang Thi Chien from Phuoc Thien 1 Village, said that every rainy season, residents had to seek shelter after hearing alarm from local authorities. Sometimes, strong winds and waves washed away the belongings and assets of local people.
With a solid embankment, the lives of the local people would become stable, she said.
Do Do Thanh, a local resident living in Phuoc Thien 1 Village, said the coastal area of Binh Hai Commune had been constantly threatened by tidal inundation.
In recent years, there have been several high tides and waves that have caused coastal erosion and the collapse of houses in coastal villages.
The embankment project to combat erosion along the Tra Khuc River, passing through Tinh Ha and Tinh Son communes, Son Tinh District, has been under construction since April.
The total length of the embankment project is approximately 5,128m with an investment of VN?200 billion. The work is scheduled to be completed this year to ensure the safety of around 260 households living along the river.
In addition, the coastal erosion prevention projects in Duc Pho Town, Binh Duong Commune, Binh Son District, are also being built. (VietnamNews)
