Pollution at Taiwan Formosa Kills Massive Aquatic Species in Central Vietnam

Pollution caused by untreated waste water of the Taiwan-invested Formosa complex in Vietnam’s central province of Ha Tinh has caused the en-mass death of aquatic species in rivers and ponds near the complex, state media has reported. After testing water samples taken from the affected areas, the Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 1 said the water in many rivers and aquatic ponds near Formosa complex contains toxic substances which cause massive death of aquatic species of the local farmers. Earlier this week, dozens of aquatic farmers in Ky Loi commune, Ky Anh district reported the en-mass death of their crops in floating cages. Households in the region also announced that aquatic species in their private ponds also died massively, causing huge financial losses for them. The affected areas are near the Taiwan-invested Formosa Industrial Zone and Vung Ang thermal power project. Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 1 suggested authorities in Ha Tinh province to test waste water from Formosa. The steel complex discharges its waste water to environment without treating it.
