Japan Pledges to Help Vietnam Upgrade Infrastructure System

Japan has pledged that it will help Vietnam implement a number of infrastructure projects such as the Cai-Mep Thi Vai International Airport, urban railway network and upgrading other roads and bridges. Japan underlined its commitment in a statement released on July 10 after the 5th meeting between Japanese Foreign Minister and his counterparts from the Mekong countries including Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. These infrastructure projects are aimed to enhance connectivity between Japan and Vietnam in particular and Japan with other countries in Mekong region in general. Besides, educational development also featured in its partnership with Vietnam. Japan noted, for example, that work was on-going for the Hoa Lac Science and Technology City. It also raised the possibility of cooperation in the establishment of high-quality universities in Vietnam. The 5th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting took place at the sidelines of the 45th ASEAN Ministerial meeting and the 19th ASEAN Regional Forum. Japan pledges a total of $23 billion in ODA for Vietnam since 1992. In Japanese fiscal year 2011, Japan provided JPY270 billion ($3.4 billion) of ODA to 16 projects in Vietnam, a record high.
