Japan Helps Vietnam Build Low-Carbon Society

The Japan National Research Institute of Environment (JNRIE) has introduced measures for building a low-carbon society in Vietnam, heard a seminar in Hanoi on April 18. The event was co-organized by the Vietnam Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and JNRIE, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said April 18. Started in Japan’s Kyoto city in 2004, the low-carbon society project was expanded to China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam in 2009, aiming to stabilize the global climate in the Asia-Pacific region. Building a low-carbon society requires assessment of special characteristics in each region and oriented forecast measures, Mikiko Kainuma from JNRIE said, adding that this model will create a foundation for growth of developing countries, including Vietnam. Although low-carbon development issue has just mentioned in recent times, the Vietnamese government has carried out many related policies in a move to mitigate greenhouse emissions, Deputy Head of Department of Hydrometeorology and Climate Change Nguyen Khac Hieu attributed. Vietnam has worked on two emission scenarios with an average of 432 million tons of CO2 per year or 500 million tons by 2030, Hieu added. (vietnamplus.vn April 18, Tin Tuc – News April 19)
