Japan Grants $11.78M for Equipment Upgrade at Vietnam’s Cancer Hospital

Health Minister Dao Hong Lan and Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) – Vietnam Office Sugano Yuichi inked an agreement on May 28, securing a grant worth VND300 billion ($11.78 million) for a project aimed at enhancing medical equipment at the National Cancer Hospital in Hanoi.

Addressing the signing event, Minister Lan expressed gratitude to the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, JICA, and Japanese experts for their steadfast support to Vietnam's healthcare sector over the years. She expressed hope that the embassy and the agency would continue to lend their support to the hospital in executing the project in the forthcoming period.

Minister Lan urged the hospital to collaborate closely with Japanese counterparts and relevant agencies to speed up procedures and ensure the efficient reception and utilization of the equipment.

In Vietnam, non-communicable diseases account for 77% of annual deaths, with cancer being the second leading cause. According to estimates from the Global Cancer Organization (GLOBOCAN), in 2022, Vietnam witnessed over 180,000 new cases of cancer and approximately 120,000 deaths attributable to the disease.
