Irrigation Downgrade in Dak Lak Province
Farmers in the Central Highland province of Dak Lak's Ea H'Leo District face water shortages as many irrigation works, including reservoirs and dams in the area have been damaged or fallen into disrepair.
Irrigation infrastructure has suffered from a lack of care and reservoirs have become so downgraded they can not store enough water to meet demand for intensive farming, according to the Ea H'Leo District People's Committee. District authorities said the degraded state of irrigation works were a result of poor management by communal authorities and a lack of security guards at irrigation sites. Authorities have reported equipment and parts stolen or destroyed at several irrigation sites. The district has an estimated 40 medium and small-sized irrigation works. (Vietnam News June 21)
