Germany One of Vietnam’s Active Partners in Climate Change Response: Official
The German government has always been one of the most active partners of Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) in environmental protection, climate change response, and sustainable development, affirmed Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh.
The official made the statement while hosting Mr. Christoph Hoffmann, vice-chairman of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, in Hanoi on July 24.
Both sides discussed emissions and energy issues, during which Deputy Minister Thanh said that in Vietnam, the energy and agricultural sectors generate the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions.
Mentioning the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) signed by Vietnam and G7 countries, he proposed Mr. Christoph Hoffmann promote Germany and G7 countries to help Vietnam find solutions to restrict coal power projects per international law and ensure energy sources for life and production.
He also called for technology transfer and financial investment from German and G7 partners in these fields.
Besides, the deputy minister suggested Germany support Vietnam with scientific and technical capacity improvement and technology transfer, especially new energy-related technologies such as hydrogen and green ammonia production, and carbon storage and landfill technology.
For his part, Mr. Christoph Hoffmann shared his concern about Vietnam’s orientation in developing clean energy, such as wind power and solar power; cutting coal power projects; increasing forest area for carbon storage; and implementing JETP.
