Germany to Fund EUR4M for Climate Change Response in Vietnam

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has signed a deal to finance EUR4 million ($5.4 million) for Vietnam to conduct a climate change response project until 2018. The Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) project focuses on improving state management capacity in coping with climate change to enable the Vietnamese government to conduct its green growth strategies. The project aims to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions which are threatening the Southeast Asian country’s living environment over the years. Vietnam’s carbon dioxide is forecast to reach 300 million tons by 2020 from 150 million tons in 2000 and 21 million tons in 1990. Being one of the five countries hardest-hit by climate change, Vietnam has prepared programs, including partnerships with foreign organizations and countries, to effectively cope with the situation. Climate change is likely to cause Vietnam a loss worth $1.9 billion annually, statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT) showed.
