Expert Points out Reasons behind University Accreditation Weakness in Vietnam

Associate Professor Hoang Ngoc Vinh, former director of the Department of Vocational Training, under the Ministry of Education and Training, has pointed out three reasons leading to the loopholes in university accreditation in Vietnam, the local Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.

The first reason is the shortage of specific standards for professional and highly applied fields such as engineering and technology, medicine, education, and law.

The second reason is that accreditation reviewers are trained and certified with general knowledge and skills, making them very difficult to evaluate a specific program at a deep professional level.

The third reason is that the organization of the accreditation teams are burdened with procedural knowledge rather than specialized knowledge.

The expert called on the Ministry of Education and Training to develop accreditation standards, especially for the fields of medicine and education, which have a significant impact on society if the quality of training programs is not ensured.

At the same time, there should be specialized training programs for program accreditation reviewers, he added, noting that the organization of accreditation teams should achieve a balance between academic and professional experts. He pointed out that accreditation reviewers from the business sector are quite common worldwide because of their practical experience.
