The Eliminate Dengue Project Vietnam (EDPV) is developing a natural approach to control the spread of dengue. We have shown that the presence of Wolbachia within the dengue carrying mosquito - Aedes aegypti – acts like a ‘vaccine’ for the mosquito and reduces its ability to pass the dengue virus to people. The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, with oversight from the Ministry of Health, established the EDPV in 2006.
Project partners include the Institute Pasteur Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Department of Health and the Australian Foundation for the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific (AFAP) in Vietnam. The EDPV is beginning the preparation phase for a large scale Wolbachia release in Nha Trang city. This trial would be part of a world first study into the efficacy of the Wolbachia method in reducing dengue risk in countries where it is endemic.
