Mission Statement

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC is often referred to as "the Wall" by millions of visitors who have made it one of the most respected memorials in the US Capital. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been a powerful symbol of reconciliation and healing of the wounds of a divisive war. Today the Memorial stands as a living history lesson. Building on the Memorial’s powerful symbolism, VVMF has developed programs to educate current and future generations about the enduring lessons of the war in Vietnam on American society.

History of operations in Vietnam

In 2001, VVMF began a partnership with the People’s Committee of Quang Tri Province to launch Project RENEW, a program to “Restore the Environment and Neutralize the Effects of the War”. Project RENEW is a comprehensive and integrated approach to the problem of explosive remnants of war (ERW) which includes clearance and destruction of cluster bombs, landmines, and other ordnance; risk education to keep children and adults safe from death and injury; victim assistance to support families who have already suffered injury and disability; database development and information management; post-clearance development such as schools and community facilities. Project RENEW is staffed and managed by Vietnamese, with technical assistance provided by international experts. From 2001 until now, Project RENEW has helped to bring down the rate of accidents and injuries in Quang Tri Province, saving lives and limbs, and has cleaned up of thousands of pieces of dangerous wartime ordnance. As a development model in Quang Tri Province, Project RENEW has achieved significant results which have contributed to the goals of making Quang Tri safe from the dangers of explosive remnants of war.
