Mission Statement
Terre des hommes started as a movement in Switzerland in 1960 with the aim of direct aid to children in need. The mission of the Terre des hommes Foundation - child relief is to work for and with children, without racial, religious, political, cultural or gender bias. In Vietnam, through technical support and institutional capacity building, the Foundation promotes the establishment of sustainable structures that provide support to children and adolescents at risk.
History of operations in Vietnam
Terre des hommes Foundation - child relief has been operating in Vietnam since 1992, originally with a focus on street children. The Foundation, better known in Vietnam as Terre des hommes - Lausanne conducted two surveys on street children in Ho Chi Minh City (the first in 1992, the second in 2000), and initiated innovative projects for the protection and care of children in street situation. This was done in close collaboration with Vietnamese partner organisations and mainly in Ho Chi Minh City and the city of Can Tho. In addition, from 1993 to 2001, Terre des hommes - Lausanne, cooperating with the respective DoLISA, implemented a rural community development project in Bu Dang (Binh Phuoc Province). Since 2001, Terre des hommes - Lausanne and its partner organisations (both state and non-state actors) have been engaged in a Programme for Social and Professional Integration of former street children, institutionalised children and adolescents at risk. This programme has since been extended beyond Ho Chi Minh City, namely in Can Tho City and to Cao Lanh City (Dong Thap Province). The final three years phase of the Programme for Social Protection and Integration will come to an end at the end of 2010, when Terre des hommes Foundation - child relief will withdraw from Vietnam. Terre des hommes - Lausanne is committed to a disengagement process which focuses on strengthening its partner organisations, trying to ensure the continuation of the activities in favour of children and adolescents at risk beyond the presence of the Foundation in Vietnam.
